Novavax was introduced as Australia’s fourth vaccine to protect community members protect themselves against COVID-19. Australia first Novavax jab took place at MedicalOne’s clinic in Elwood.

The Honourable Greg Hunt, former Minister for Health and Aged Care was in attendance to thank MedicalOne’s health workers.

“Thanks very much to Dr Peter Stratmann, who's the founder of Medical One, and to have his general practices and our amazing nurses such as Lil and Bernadette, who are vaccinating and have done thousands and thousands of vaccinations over the course of the rollout, is just a great privilege for us.”

Unlike the AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, Novavax joined the line up as a protein-based vaccine. This type of vaccine it contains part of the COVID-19 spike protein, the introduction of which encourages our immune system to build an immune response against the virus.

Minister Hunt was also in attendance to hear from the patient, Angela Luttick. Luttick said she was excited to receive the vaccine and encouraged other community members to consider their own vaccination status.

“I'm very, very excited to be the first recipient of the Novavax vaccine… And I am very, very excited to show you that I am perfectly well after having this vaccine.”

Providing support to primary health workers

Supporting general practices and pharmacies to provide COVID-19 jabs has been an ongoing priority for South Eastern Melbourne PHN (SEMPHN) for the last few years.

This response is in addition to other COVID-19 priorities and services rolled out by PHNs across Victoria, including General Practice Respiratory Clinics (GPRCs), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) distribution and opportunities for primary health professionals who may be feeling overwhelmed or stressed to access free wellbeing support.
